What is Body Positivity?

During my annual vacation at my “Happy Place” Long Beach Island, NJ, I enjoyed walking along the ocean’s edge and marveling at the sand, shells and sea gulls. My attention started to turn away from nature onto myself and specifically to my body. As I continued walking and exploring the beach, I noted that I am enjoying an easier time navigating the uneven terrain this year as compared to last year. I can go from sitting in my low-lying sand chair to standing in one smooth movement. I think back on my daily regimen of healthy movement, portion control, hydration, and emotional balance that I have been following the past years and give thanks for welcoming these healthy habits into my life.

I acknowledge the way I balanced my chair, blanket, umbrella, and beach bag as I walked from my parking spot onto the beach without panting, being short of breath or needing to rest along the way. I make an analogy between balancing my beach gear with being in weight loss maintenance. Using my intuition and self- knowledge to guide me.

Eventually, I spot people of all shapes, sizes and ages devouring all the gifts the beach is offering today: sun, sand, smiles and even a rainbow. I think to myself: this is body positivity! Being able to enjoy harmony and balance in your body and feeling nourished by nature.

As the sun starts to shift and I pack up my belongings to walk to my car, I honor myself by celebrating the intentional self-care strategies of portion control, daily movement, hydration, and emotional support from friends and loved ones that culminate in body positivity.

My definition of body positivity is practicing the strategies that feed my mind, body and soul in a way I love that my mind, body and soul love back.
